지도책에 없는 나라, 라도니아(Ladonia)
스웨덴 남서부에는 고작 1킬로 평방미터밖에 안되는 라도니아(Ladonia)라는 나라가 있다. 처음 들어보는 나라 이름일텐데, 그 이유는 라도니아가 실제로 사람이 거주하는 국가가 아니라 가상의 나라이기 때문이다. 가상 국가이므로 세계 지도책 어디를 봐도 라도니아라는 나라는 나오지 않고, 다른 나라에서도 이를 국가로 인정하지 않고 있다.

라도니아는 1996년, 스웨덴의 설치미술가인 라스 빌크스(Lars Vilks)가 세운 가상국이다. 이 나라를 세우게 된 계기는 이렇다. 빌크스는 대형 추상고형물 2개를 세운 적이 있는데, 스웨덴 정부 당국에서 이를 철거하려 하자 이에 반발해 지리한 법적 싸움을 벌였다고 한다. 하지만 결국 법원에서 스웨덴 정부의 손을 들어주자, 자신의 돈으로 조형물 주변 1킬로 평방미터를 구입해 버린 다음, 라도니아라는 나라를 세워버린 것이다.

가상국가이긴 하지만 인터넷 상에서 활용할 국기, 국가(國歌), 정부조직을 갖추고 있다. 웹사이트를 통해 주민들도 생겨나기 시작했는데, 등록된 시민권자가 6천 여명을 넘고 있을 정도이다. 물론 진짜 나라가 아니고 상징적인 시민권이 부여되는 것이다. 한번은 라도니아의 웹사이트를 보고 이를 진짜 국가로 오인한 파키스탄인 3천 여명이 한꺼번에 이민을 위한 시민권 신청을 하는 해프닝이 벌어지기도 했다.

라도니아와 같은 가상 국가를 micronation, cybernation, 또는 fantasy country라는 말로 부른다. 주로 인터넷의 웹사이트만 운영하는 것으로 관심 있는 사람들이 시민권을 얻고 주민으로 인터넷에서 활동하고 있다. 현재 이런 가상국가는 수십 개나 있고, 정식 국가로 인정 받으려 활동하고 있으며 국가를 상징하는 국기나 화폐 등을 가지고 있는 특징이 있다.
